I am Korina Melezhik, a post-graduate student at the English dept. of Tavrida state univ., Simferopol, Crimea, Ukraine, doing a research on the discourse of the Big Brother reality show (2006, 2007, 2008).
The idea is that a new TV reality show sociolect has originated during past 10-15 years and its position in English language continuum is somewhere between Standard English, Estuary English and Cockney. The Big Brother participants realistically represent the current demographic ratio of TV viewers in London, South East and Central England:
Consequently BB sociolect should represent peculiarities of grammar, vocabulary and pronunciation of corresponding strata of the population.
My grammar and vocabulary material (see attachment) was selected from BB7, BB8, BB9 and verified, basing on the principle that:
1. All selected grammatical samples are marked as non-standard in grammars of English.
2. All selected words and word combinations are marked as slang in dictionaries.
Now I need to know how native speakers can evaluate my findings.
I wonder if it is possible for yahoo group members to read and mark examples according to the task set in the beginning of the attachment.
Thank you very much.
Sincerely
Korina Melezhik
